Dieting – Fad vs. Nutrition

Most people have dabbled in fad diets, or at least know someone who has. Every other week there seems to be a new celebrity-endorsed diet that promises to make you shed the pounds quicker than the last one.

nutritionWhether it’s juicing or eating less than 500 calories every second day, fad diets are often nothing more than an unhealthy and unbalanced way of eating that usually ends up lasting no more than a few weeks. There is very rarely any medical science or nutrition to back up the promise of these diets as
they tend not to help you maintain your weight after a sudden loss.

Almost all of these diet trends have a low chance of success and can often have harmful side effects. Diets such as the Atkins diet, a low-carb, high protein, high fat diet, have shown to increase chances of certain types of cancer as well as heart disease and strokes. Liquid or juice diets often starve our bodies of certain substances we need to live a healthy lifestyle and can also often cause your body to lower its metabolic rate, resulting in actually burning fewer calories.

With it being estimated that only 5 percent of fad dieters keep the weight off for any significant period of time, how can you make sure you stay at your desired, healthy weight?
