Anti-Wrinkle Injections
With over 12 years’ experience administering anti-wrinkle injections in Glasgow, Dr Sheila O’Neill is a trusted professional you can rely on to undertake this procedure with the maximum of care. Contrary to the general public belief, it is only very small amounts of toxin that are used to obtain the desired cosmetic results. In actual fact, much larger amounts of botulinum are used to treat medical conditions such as migraines or facial asymmetry. As a result, the side effects are very rare.
An anti-wrinkle injection is a protein that helps to stop muscle spasm. It works by blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscles, softening the facial lines. Procedures available include:
- Forehead – ‘worry lines’ formed when we raise our eyebrows
- Glabellar – ‘frown lines’ appearing in the area between our eyebrows
- Crow’s feet – the areas around the outside of the eyes
- Bunny lines – wrinkles at the bridge of the nose
The first anti-wrinkle injection appointment lasts for approximately 1 hour. Each treatment thereafter lasts for around half an hour. Downtime is very short, with the main symptoms experienced being some redness and discomfort, as well as slight swelling at the injection site. It takes around 2-3 days for the effects to be noticed, with the full effect of the treatment achieved within 2 weeks.
How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?
Results usually last 3-4 months, but this can be longer after receiving repeated treatments. Individual results vary.
PRICE: 1 area – £160, 2 areas – £220, 3 areas – £280
Bunny Lines
Bunny lines are the creases that appear when the nose wrinkles up – for example, when we sniff or smell something. The careful placement of anti-wrinkle injections at either side of the nose can reduce the appearance of these bunny lines. This is best carried out by an experienced aesthetics practitioner since your smile can be affected if they are not carried out properly.
Lipstick lines / Barcode lines / Downturned angles of mouth
Lipstick lines are fine lines around the mouth that become more apparent with age.
Although often treated with dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections can also treat this area and a combination of the two treatments is usually followed.
The same treatment combination can be used to correct downturned angles of the mouth, correcting a sad mouth appearance.
For other lines around the mouth, most practitioners recommend the use of dermal fillers to smooth the wrinkles, creating a smooth surface to the skin.
Chin
As we get older, the muscles in the chin, known as the mentalis muscles, become overactive – meaning they flex more often than they should, creating a dimpled, puckered appearance.
This effect is exacerbated by:
• tissue loss, making the skin appear thinner
• sun exposure
• bone loss
• gum recession
Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to relax these muscles, thereby smoothing and reducing the overall dimpled effect.
Bruxism – Teeth Grinding – Jaw
Bruxism is a condition which results after prolonged episodes of jaw clenching and teeth grinding.
It can cause:
* worn teeth
* headaches
* earaches
In many cases, bruxism is linked to stress and occurs subconsciously, often during sleep. Sleep conditions, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (in which your natural breathing patterns are disrupted), have been linked to incidences of bruxism.
Bruxism may not be permanent, however, episodes often occur during times of great anxiety. Sufferers are also prone to overly clenching their jaw when concentrating particularly hard while awake.
Giving anti-wrinkle injections into the masseter muscles at the lateral cheek area can relax them and effectively treat the condition resolving most of the symptoms above.
Jawline Reduction
A square jawline is due to increased strength and volume of the masseter which sits at the sides of the lower face.
This can be reduced using anti-wrinkle injections, giving a less square jaw with a softer angle. You will generally notice softening of the masseter muscle at 2 weeks and softening of the jawline over the next 4 weeks. The change in the jawline shape is truly remarkable.
The method for injection into the masseter is quick and painless, with no downtime. You may require a second treatment at 4-8 weeks, but generally, this is not necessary.
PRICE: Jawline from £260
Nasal correction with anti-wrinkle injections
The depressor septi muscle is a small muscle on the underside of the nasal septum which is responsible for lowering the tip of the nose and constricting the nostrils. The action of this muscle can therefore worsen the natural drooping of the tip of the nose that occurs with ageing. Anti-wrinkle injections just beneath the septum of the nose can produce lift of the tip.
PRICE: Nasolabial lines from £265
Nasal flare
Some patients are bothered by the widening of their nostrils or rhythmical contractions on certain occasions. Anti wrinkle injections on either side of the nose above the outer flares of the nostrils can correct this.
Hyperhidrosis / Excessive underarm sweating
Anti-wrinkle injections are an effective way to treat excessive sweating under the arms.
It works by blocking the chemical at the end of the nerves so that it cannot work on the glands or muscles.
In the case of the sweat glands, it turns them off to reduce sweating.
It requires multiple small injections of the toxin a few centimetres apart in each armpit.
Results take 2 weeks to occur and can last often for 6-9 months.
